Caring for Phalaenopsis orchids

Phalaenopsis are one of the easiest and most rewarding orchids to grow. Phalaenopsis are also among America's favorite orchids. They adapt themselves well to the indoor environment of home or office. They are commonly known as the moth orchid and are also popularly cultivated by beginners. Their
flowers can last for several months, and a well-grown plant can flower several times during a year. The main season for this genus begins in winter and continues through spring.

Light Requirements:

Sufficient lighting is a must for successful cultivation of this genus. Phalaenopsis grow well in either an east or a lightly shaded south facing window. West windows should be used cautiously because the west window may become very hot during the late spring through early fall and the foliage on your Phalaenopsis may burn. Artificial lighting can also be used if necessary, to provide the plant with enough light. In a light meter, 1,000 to 1,500 foot-candles is recommended.

Temperature Requirements:

Phalaenopsis grow well under warmer conditions. A temperature of 60 to 65 degrees at night and 75 to 85 degrees during the day is ideal because warmer conditions allow the plant to grow more vigorously throughout the year. A drop in the night temperatures during early fall will be beneficial to initiate flower spikes. Phalaenopsis thrive under normal household temperatures.

Water Requirements:

Depending upon the temperature, Phalaenopsis should be watered about once or twice a week. During the summer, the plants should be watered every 4-5 days. The thumb rule of watering that should be followed is "More heat more water, less heat less water". Phalaenopsis should be kept on the moist side. But this does not mean that they should be left in standing water. However the plants should be watered early in the day so that the foliage will be dry by nightfall.

Humidity Requirements:

Phalaenopsis require approximately 50% humidity. Often a kitchen or bathroom will provide that amount of humidity. Humidity Trays may be required for other locations in the house.

Fertilizing Requirements:

Phalaenopsis must be fertilized on a regular basis. It is recommended to pre-water the orchids if the potting media is dry before applying the diluted nutrient solution.

Potting Requirements:
Phalaenopsis should be repotted once in every two years. Phalaenopsis should ideally be repotted immediately after flowering.

Pests:

Common pests associated with Phalaenopsis are scales, mealy bugs, spider mites, etc. A time-release insecticide is the most efficient method of pest control.
